series, the title was re-released in Japan's 3DS Virtual Console and the iconic main theme, composed by legendary Nintendo composer Kazumi Totaka, was featured in Nintendo Sound Selection 1, as official compilation album with some of the company's classic tracks. The Prince of Sablé, the game's protagonist, shows up as an Assist Trophy in the Smash Bros. The game was sadly never released in english officially, probably because of its focus in the story and satirical tone that maybe wouldn't ressonate that much with the western Game Boy public at the time, but gets a lot of respect as a cult Nintendo title especially after the release of a fan translation in 2011. Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru also was developed in a similar engine to Link's Awakening (where Prince Richard, the rival from this title, makes a cameo) and has a very gorgeous world and sprites.

The focus here is all in the comedic story, more than the gameplay itself.

With witty and funny dialogue, this 1992 game is ahead of its time, parodying and mocking genre tropes, developing several different characters in unexpected ways and just generally being full of charm and originality.

It sounds generic until you notice how self aware it is. It's an adventure game made by Nintendo R&D1 about a prince that goes in a journey to save the princess from an evil king that captured her. Personally, Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru (For the Frog the Bell Tolls) is one of my favorite Nintendo games. I also excluded a bunch of NES games that got arcade "Vs" versions (such as Duck Hunt), but I'm not 100% sure that qualifies as different games.Īnyway, that said, what are some of these games you enjoy or would you like to see more of? I excluded DS/Wii apps because otherwise they would dominate this whole thing, but it's kinda hard to define what exactly is a game, so maybe some things here may be almost crossing that line. If there's something wrong or missing, please tell me.
